Villa Bóža

Walking down the street, we look up now and then observing the houses. We see their forms and the changes they amassed over the time of their existence. But one particular house seems to stand out. At first it seems quite ordinary, but as we approach closer we start to grasp its ziggurat-like structure.
Vašek is up on the roof, harvesting the honey from the bee-hives, while Bóža deftly speeds down the ramp. Bořek waves at us, casually, from his play room and Kristýna is carrying outside plates filled with delicious food. The preparations for a sunday barbecue are in full swing. The little red gate let’s us know we are welcome with its softly creaking sound. In the distance we can hear screams and laughs of neighbourhood kids enjoying their last days of summer by the poolsides, as we enter.
Entering the house Beyond the glass entrance door we find a simple space, open and unconstrained. We go on, passing the quiet bedrooms prepared for night rest. Bóža speeds around us and disappears again around a rounded corner. That’s where the heart of the lower apartment opens. A glazed wall lets the morning sun into the kitchen, which is connected with the dinning room and living room. And there is also the green house, filled to the brim with lush green plants and ripe red peppers and tomatoes. The door to the patio is hardly ever closed during the summer and through it we catch a whiff of charcoal as the barbecue heats up.
Going upstairs Bořek runs into the garden, holding a piece of lego in his hand, urging us to go upstairs and take a look at his newly completed creation. And upstairs we go, climbing a well-preserved staircase into the upper part of the house. Meanwhile Bóža has circled around the house and drove up the ramp into her own kingdom. Bořek is showing us his collection of building kits and takes us through the upper apartment. It is immediately apparent that this is Bóža’s world. All is adapted to fit the daily stunts, feats and maneuvers of her wheelchair. Tall space of the kitchen is fitted with a lifted wooden platform for friends sleeping over. Finally we walk out onto the terrace. We see the entire garden from up here. Lush green, albeit fading slightly in the face of enclosing autumn.
The bees Looking down onto the garden our eyes get lost among the trees and shrubs. Suddenly Vašek’s voice brings us back: “Guys, you ought to see this!” Heads bent back, looking up we climb the ramp to the roof terrace. The buzz of the bees is overpowering as we stare into the empty bee-hives. It is a clear day and we can see far towards the horizon.
But now we already hear Kristýna calling us. The barbecue is ready and the aroma draws us back to the garden. Sun is slowly setting and the calm surface of the pool reflects its surroundings. It’s the last day of summer, but the night is far from over.
